Overweight for a day

It's nearly 40 years since diet and fitness guru Rosemary Conley was overweight and founded her diet and fitness empire. Since then she's helped millions of people lose weight and get fit. But can she actually understand how it feels to be overweight? We asked Rosemary to wear a padded fat suit and carry 20lb of extra weight for one day to truly empathise with the people she aims to help every day. Here she discusses the results with Kerry Pillai who lost 10st at a Rosemary Conley class and trial dieter Ray Whiteman

Hi Cordelia, it's in the supporting video with Dr Hilary on the medical channel (which should come up as a related video) where he and Rosemary talk about what the impact on Rosemary's health would be if she were overweight and Rosemary explains that the suit gives her the appearance of being 5-6 stone heavier. http://www.rosemaryconley.tv/Health/Medical/Dr-Hilary-on-Rosemarys-fat-suit.aspx We're limited to making videos that are no longer than 10 minutes to try and ensure they play fairly quickly and smoothly which is why all the information is in different chunks. Hope that helps, Gemma

Phew! That is a relief- thanks Gemma! But if you look at what is written above, it says that RC carried 20lb and not 6 stone of extra weight for that day and in the video she mentions size 18 and 16 then says that is obese. Nor does she talk about weight in relation to height.
I think this is all misleading. At no pojnt does she mention that the padding makes her 6 stone overweight. Any chance of making this clearer?

Hi Cordelia, Rosemary is not saying that anybody who is a size 18 is obese, she's saying that given her height at 6 stone overweight, this size would make her obese on the BMI scale. Well done on your weight loss. Gemma

I must be living in a parallel universe because I do not recognise myself in by this video. I am size 18 which RC says is obese. I go to the gym 4 times a week and do a strenuous routine for 1.5 hours each time. I walk 6-8 miles a day. I have no problem picking things up off the floor and I do not want to sit down all the time. I have lost 2 stone over the last 9 months and intend to lose another 2 stone over the next 9 months and I am happy to do this slowly and steadily. I feel fit and am very active - can stand all day when necessary at exhibitions etc. So what is wrong with me? Please do tell me!

I have just finished watching the film, not listened to the comments from the others guests yet, but I felt very tearful watching the film I think this should be shown in schools to educate our young people and their parents. we all have choices I live in Spain & the attitude to food & eating here is totally different good quality food here is very important & guess what hardly any overweight/obese people . Education & lifestyle choices are the answer Rosemary rocks and here´s to the next 40 years Well done Rosemary this should be on main stream TV

I thought this was a dreadful thing to do. I cannot see how dressing up as an overweight person and parading around looking like a stiff, solid barrel in a pink ensemble is helpful in any way to someone looking for advice on losing weight or getting fit. What a terrible waste of money too. Simply awful.

WoW.. Its made me really take a step back and realise just how hard it is being obese, I am still on my journey but have lost nearly 4 stone since January - I attended a trade show this month for 5 days.. something I usually dread.
This year, I had more energy, could stand all day (In heels) felt fantastic and received nice compliments.
Loosing weight doesnt just fill me with extra confidence, it seems to make a difference to how others will acknowledge you.
I am now more then ever determined to shift the extra weight that I need to loose.

This is a fabulous video - I had a tear in my eye while I watched it - I have been in denial for so long (I used to weigh 8 stone 7lbs, but have gained 2 and a half stone - although it doesn't sound like much, it's a major thing going from a size 10/12 to a size 16 [which I am now]). Thanks Rosemary for making this video - it's really got me thinking about how much excess weight I'm lugging around and how much I really need to get back to 8 and a half stone (if not 8 stone) and start exercising daily (as I used to do). Thank you, Rosemary for your care and concern and all the hard work you put into making your diets successful and allowing everyone access to this channel! God bless you :) xxxx

Rosemary I cannot begin to express how this video made me feel, I haven't just shed a tear but have absolutely sobbed, this didn't just scratch the surface with me it went straight to the core and hit every nerve I have had buried for years. Although I have known I do not wish to continue being this size I have used all the tricks in the book to ignore the size I am, and covered up in every way possible, physically and emotionally. I know I cannot be the only person to feel this way whilst watching this video, and I know others who attend Rachel's class (Dewsbury) have expressed similar thoughts to her. I am interested to know if you were truly aware when you put the suit on what a huge impact this would have on others, or if it was an interesting pyschological and physical exercise, either way I would like to thank you. It sometimes takes something like this to make us realise just how much life we have already wasted struggling into cars, sweating carrying bags, not being able to get up or down as quickly as we would like, wishing we could wear the heels and the clothes we want to, not having our hair down to hide our faces, in short, putting our lives on hold and I did it in such a complete and thorough way I even believed my own press and was convinced that this is the way I am meant to be. I can't say it won't be a struggle to lose this weight, but I will certainly be replaying this video frequently to remind me of the truth and help me keep motivated, I just have to ask myself what do I really want for the future, more of the same or something different, I have made my choice - Thank you.
