Yes you can have chips on a diet! You just have to change the way you prepare them. This tasty grilled gammon steak is a real pub favourite but this recipe serves up a fraction of the fat and calories at 397 per plateful. Serve this to your menfolk and they'll never even know this is diet food!

Gammon, egg and chips

Ingredients

  • 2 gammon steaks
  • 300g sweet potatoes, peeled
  • 1 vegetable stock cube
  • 2 eggs

Cooking Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas Mark 6. Trim away all visible fat from the gammon steaks.
  2. Cut the sweet potatoes into chips and add to a pan of boiling water along with the vegetable stock cube. Cook for 5 minutes, then drain well and place on a non-stick baking tray.
  3. Bake near the top of the oven for 20 minutes until cooked.
  4. About 8-10 minutes before the chips are ready, grill or griddle the gammon steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side.
  5. In a preheated non-stick pan, dry-fry the eggs.
  6. Serve each gammon steak topped with an egg, alongside the chips and a few peas.

Tips

Adding a vegetable stock cube to the potato water avoids the need to add salt.
