Dr Hilary on... Coeliac Disease

Rosemary Conley chats to Dr Hilary Jones as part of coeliac awareness week about coeliac disease. Gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye triggers an immune reaction in people with coeliac disease and eating gluten damages the lining of the gut. Coeliac disease affects 1 in 100 people but only 10% of people are diagnosed.

Hi Bookmad, thanks for your comments which I'll make sure Rosemary gets to see. You're completely right in that given the short amount of time we have in the videos some of the information given inevitably ends up being very general and none specific. For that reason we've included the links to the Coeliac UK website http://www.coeliac.org.uk/ so any viewers who need more help and information can get some expert help from them. Obviously every patient is individual and treatment and diagnosis will vary enormously which is something Dr Hilary is always aware of. What we aim to do is give out general help and information and in this case raise awareness as part of Coeliac awareness week. Thanks again for commenting and I hope that anyone who reads it will understand the seriousness of this condition. Gemma

Hello Rosemary!
As a sufferer of coeliac disease I enjoyed Dr Hillary's interview on coeliac disease. However in the very limited time available to him,it did paint a very simplistic view of the complaint. As well as a blood test I also had an endoscopy to examine the small intestine where the problem arises.
I'm afraid it's not as simple as just looking at the very limited shelf space allocated to "Free From" foods in the supermarkets & selecting what you want. Many, many other products contain gluten from Mars bars to tomato ketchup, soups to sausages etc etc.The Coeliac Society does a wonderful book to help us with identification of many safe products,& those which are sold as specialised Free From products are often 3-4 times more expensive than gluten containing products eg a large GF loaf can be £2.79 as opposed to £1.30 maybe for a gluten containing loaf.
I write about this because I am concerned that people might come away with the idea that it is a fad diet complaint, when in fact it is a lifelong auto-immune disease.Non adherence to the diet leads to malnutrition & possibly bowel cancer.
Thank you for reading this.
